Founded in July 2003, the Centre for Philosophy of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (CFCUL) is an R&D Unit funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (UIDB/00678/2020 and UIDP/00678/2020), located at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa). CFCUL is composed of an international and interdisciplinary team that includes integrated members and collaborators with affiliations to different institutions.
CFCUL is the first and only R&D Unit in Portugal exclusively devoted to the Philosophy of Science, and over the years it has gained a growing international recognition. Its mission is to promote research, training, and dissemination of knowledge in the area of Philosophy of Science in accordance with the best international scientific standards.
CFCUL’s research profile is broad, based on an extensive and open
understanding of Philosophy of Science that takes into account the “analytic” and “continental” traditions, thus spanning from formalised to historical and phenomenological approaches to science. Furthermore, CFCUL seeks to analyse the metaphysical, ethical, political and aesthetic dimensions and implications of scientific practice.
CFCUL is organised in three Research Groups: (1) Philosophy of the Formal Sciences, Epistemology and Methodology; (2) Philosophy of the Natural Sciences; (3) Philosophy of Technology, Human Sciences, Art and Society.
